The Diet That Boosts Your Memory
A study published in Experimental Gerontology, December 2020, examined the link between dietary patterns and cognitive functions.
The study involved 511 participants in their 70s and 80s with or without symptoms of dementia. The participants were given tests that estimated their memory, thinking speed and problem-solving skills. Each participant’s dietary patterns were examined, and MRI scans were performed to establish their brain structure.
After careful analysis, the researchers established that participants who adhered to the Mediterranean diet had higher test scores. This diet is based on fruits, vegetables, grains, olive oil, fish, and other lean protein. In contrast, those consuming high amounts of processed food had lower test scores. The study concluded dietary patterns did not affect the brain structure.
The Mediterranean diet involves consuming food rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. These compounds are potent in fighting inflammation that negatively affects our entire body, including our cognitive function. Eating foods with such an effect improves mental clarity and keeps our immune system in good shape.
Help Your Body With the Right Food
Besides improving our memory, the Mediterranean diet offers a wide range of benefits for our overall health. It reduces the risk of heart disease, helps with weight loss, fights off diabetes, etc. Even if you’re perfectly healthy, adopting the Mediterranean diet can be a great choice.
