Don’t Trust Everything You Read – Scientist Busted This Gluten-Related Myth

A recent study investigated the link between gluten and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms, and the results may surprise you. Read on to learn more about this.

Gluten and Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Because gluten causes stomach problems, many believe it’s also the main culprit for experiencing severe IBS symptoms such as abdominal pain, gas, cramping, etc.

A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition investigated whether there is a connection between consuming gluten and the appearance of IBS symptoms. The study involved 103 participants with moderate or severe IBS, which lasted nine months.

The participants tracked their gluten intake and the presence of fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols (FODMAP) in their diet. FODMAP stands for sugars that the small intestine can’t absorb. These sugars are found in dairy, wheat-based products, and certain fruits and vegetables.

The results showed that high FODMAP foods cause more severe IBS symptoms. However, contrary to popular belief, the study discovered gluten isn’t related to worsening the symptoms.

Still, the authors stated everyone is different. Some foods can cause a reaction in one individual and not affect others.
